Life & Death on The Beach

January 21, 2023
Living in a rural setting, we are often confronted with nature’s life cycle.

We were made more aware of that this past Sunday when folks walking on Kingsburg Beach came upon a deceased harbour porpoise.

Heather White contacted Marine Animal Response Society (MARS) who sent out a team to recover the body; they will perform a necropsy on the body to determine cause of death.

Fortunately this type of occurrence happens infrequently here, but seals and other animals are occasionally found on the beach. MARS has a reporting hotline and they request that you call 1-866-567-6277 if you find a live-distressed or dead marine animal.

We expect to have the veterinary diagnostic findings in late February so check back for the results. To learn more about MARS visit www.marineanimals.ca.
