A Tiny Visitor
June 13, 2026
In the past week, neighbours have reported new births of fawns and very young deer gamboling after their parents through Kingsburg, but I’d never seen a fawn up close . . . until yesterday. In the morning I walked up our path with a large potted plant in my hands. As I approached our door, I turned to put the plant down in a protected place, only to find a tiny fawn (who had also sought a safe spot) curled up under a rose bush, staring at me.
My first concern was “where’s Mom?!” Quick research indicated that doe deer leave their fawns for hours at a time - never straying too far - while they forage for food and will return 3 or 4 times a day to nurse their fawn. Whew! A few hours later, however, our lovely wee visitor had disappeared, but was later spotted in a protected spot next door, before it dashed off again. Late in the afternoon an adult deer circled several times around our corner of Mosher Road, seemingly searching for something. We’re all hoping that Mom and the little one enjoyed a happy reunion! — Alison David
