Lucy the Lobster - the South Shore Crustacean Prognosticator

February 02, 2025
Wiarton Willie stands alone forecasting an early spring against other rodents including Fred la Marmotte, Shubenacadie Sam and our friend Phil to the South - who all threw us some shade. Lucy, who is known to be in her mid 50’s, also saw her shadow on the South Shore near Barrington. Don’t despair, there is much to do if winter persists for six more weeks.

A deep dive into the genesis of the solitary crustacean prognosticator indicates she has been on the job since 2018. Apparently, she crawled to the shore on February 2nd that year and the rest, as they say, is history. For the balance of the year Lucy resides in a tank at Capt. Kat’s Lobster Shack in Barrington; rumour has it, Lucy is always up for a ‘shell-fie’.

Barrington, the lobster capital of Canada, has much to offer over the rest of the month. Consider getting your lobster crawl on. Kingsburg could not be more centrally located along this lobster route of riches. Consider checking out the 7th Annual Lobster Crawl Festival - February 1-28, 2025, from Barrington to Peggy’s Cove.

Some South Shore lobster facts:

  1. The world’s largest lobster was caught off the South Shore of Nova Scotia in 1977 and weighed in at more than 44 pounds.

  2. Gail Atkinson, the female lobsterwoman and captain of Nellie Row, has a predominantly female crew based in Lunenburg.

  3. Kingsburg is located in LFA 33 that extends from Cow Bay in Halifax to Shelburne. Lobster fishing season in this zone extends from the last Monday in November (Dumping Day) until May 31st.
