Look Up, Look Way Up!

With fine weather, good SW winds, and a glistening low tide beach, the 2nd Annual Kite Day did not disappoint. More than a dozen kites went up shortly after 3pm, and many others took wing as the afternoon played out. Seasoned kite flyers came from all around our fair headlands, from Lunenburg, and even a couple from Bridgewater. The youngest flyer was a toddler named Bear, who fell in love with kites this July at the Atlantic Kite Festival on Citadel Hill. The oldest flyer shall remain anonymous. Camaraderie abounded. The brisk winds were pretty demanding of the lightest of kites and called for quick and steady piloting. Long-held memories were revived by the act of making a kite from scratch, which also happened this year, regardless of how well it flew or didn’t. As ever, there is a simplicity and joy to flying a kite—for the first time, as we witnessed this year—or any time. When humans look upward we are changed, somehow lifted in spirit. A deep biological response is liberated. One senses the future, brightened by a kite dancing.  We are looking forward to the 3rd Annual Kite Day in 2027- date TBD.
