More Kingsburg History

SEPTEMBER 10, 2024
This rainy September evening, community members in Kingsburg were treated to a captivating talk by local author, geologist, and amateur historian David Mossman.

The capacity crowd at the Duckworth barn heard a quick precis of the European settler history of the Kingsburg area, starting with the Swiss protestant Hirtle family who settled the eponymous beach area. But that short history was merely to set the scene.

The real heart of the story was about Gladee's canteen, which was once located near the parking lot of Hirtle's beach. David's relatives served up meals at the canteen for decades, feeding beachgoers, locals and those who traveled from further away. The canteen was once even listed in Where to Eat in Canada. David's memories of the coconut cream pies brought a wistful smile to his face.

A pleasant talk and a great way to learn about the history of the people of this place. You can learn more through David's books on various local topics including rum running, the canteen, one room schools, and country stores. — Alexander MacDonald
